UAW secures Stellantis investment, commits to new Dodge Durango build
Stellantis and UAW Reach Landmark Agreement on American Investments
Detroit, MI – Stellantis has pledged substantial investments to bolster American autoworkers, following persistent efforts by the United Auto Workers (UAW) to ensure the company met its 2023 contract negotiation promises. This development resolves UAW's disputes over the Dodge Durango production and the reopening of the Belvidere Assembly Plant.
The automaker has confirmed plans to manufacture the upcoming Dodge Durango at the Detroit Assembly Complex. Additionally, Stellantis intends to reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant in 2027, assigning it a new midsize truck project, as initially agreed upon in the union's 2023 contract. These initiatives are reinstated under the new company leadership after having been previously revoked by former CEO Carlos Tavares.
UAW President Shawn Fain remarked, “This victory is a testament to the power of workers standing together and holding a billion-dollar corporation accountable. We’ve shown that we will do what it takes to protect the good union jobs that are the lifeblood of places like Belvidere, Detroit, Kokomo, and beyond.”
Furthering its commitment, Stellantis announced a significant investment in Kokomo, Indiana, intending to commence Phase II production of the GME-T4 EVO engine in 2026. This decision marks a reversal from prior plans to relocate the work outside the United States. The existing GME-T4 EVO production at the Dundee Engine Plant will remain unchanged. Moreover, Stellantis plans to amplify component production at the Toledo Machining Plant.
The UAW's persistent advocacy through rallies, grievances, and workplace organization contributed to the removal of CEO Carlos Tavares in late 2024. New COO Antonio Filosa of Stellantis North America has signaled a collaborative approach with the UAW to enhance vehicle production within the United States.
In the aftermath of securing a groundbreaking 2023 contract that included a unique right to strike over product and investment commitments, the UAW has enforced its agreement with Stellantis. The union continues to advocate for worker-friendly trade policies to prevent industrial decline and protect working-class communities nationwide.
