Illinois American Water Showcases Infrastructure Advancements with State Legislators

Illinois American Water recently opened its Streator Water Treatment Plant to members of the Illinois General Assembly, spotlighting major infrastructure investments and their benefits. This event saw attendance from several prominent figures, including Senator Chris Balkema, Representative Jason R. Bunting, Tim Ruestman, candidate for IL-District 105, and a representative from the office of Representative Dennis Tipsword.

The tour provided legislators from the Streator region with insights into the improvements being made to ensure access to safe and reliable drinking water. Additionally, the visit emphasized the company's efforts toward upgrading treatment processes and safeguarding local water sources.

Senator Chris Balkema expressed his confidence after the tour, stating, "Visiting the American Water plant in Streator gave me confidence in the critical investments being made to meet drinking water regulations across our communities and to keep quality water flowing to our taps."

Representative Jason R. Bunting added, "Supporting the utilities that provide the services and amenities that keep our communities going is important, especially as systems age. I want to thank Illinois American Water for the opportunity to tour the Streator plant and to learn about the ways they're innovating in our community."

The company has recently completed significant upgrades to enhance water quality and protect local customers:

• Ultraviolet Treatment System ($4.1 million): This upgrade enhances disinfection capabilities by using ultraviolet light to treat bacteria and microorganisms in the raw water sourced from the Vermilion River.
• Water Plant Filter Improvement ($3.7 million): In 2024, construction was completed to improve aging water filters and add a new structure for increased protection over the sedimentation and flocculation basins.

John Killips, Senior Director of Engineering at Illinois American Water, noted, "Illinois American Water has invested $26.5 million over the past 5 years into the Streator Water Treatment Plant and distribution system. These investments are crucial for us to maintain our ability to provide clean, safe and reliable water service for the roughly 7,600 customers the plant serves."
