Ohio's Gateway Film Center Workers Ratify First Union Contract
Historic Union Contract Ratified by Gateway Film Center Workers
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gateway Film Center employees in Columbus have made history by unanimously approving their first union contract. This significant achievement follows the formation of the Gateway Film Center United (GFCU) union with AFSCME Ohio Council 8, a decision made in November 2024. The contract promises to bring much-needed stability to the workplace.
“This contract represents a huge win and delivers stability for our team that has been sorely needed,” stated Ashby Daugherty, an admissions and membership services associate and a member of the GFCU/AFSCME Local 281 negotiation team. Daugherty emphasized the importance of new systems that support employee growth, such as annual wage increases and pathways from part-time to full-time employment. Enhancements to scheduling and training are also part of the agreement, making the Gateway Film Center a more conducive environment for its workforce.
The negotiated contract includes key benefits such as predictable scheduling, on-call pay, grievance procedures, leave protections, and stipends for work attire. These provisions highlight the empowerment gained through direct negotiations with management, ensuring that the employees can continue to deliver quality services to the Columbus community.
Expressing solidarity and commitment, Daugherty, who also serves as the recording secretary for GFCU/Local 281, described the contract as a testament to the dedication and unity of the team at the Gateway Film Center. “This is one of the greatest teams I’ve had the pleasure to work with — people who deeply care about film, our patrons, and this incredible community we’ve all built together — and this agreement helps make sure we can retain these passionate folks. I’ve always hoped to leave the Gateway better than I found it,” Daugherty added.
For the Gateway Film Center staff, this initial contract marks a significant step toward securing their future and maintaining the center's legacy as a vital Ohio institution. AFSCME Ohio Council 8, which represents cultural workers across Ohio, continues to provide a powerful voice for over 50,000 workers nationwide, thanks to initiatives like the AFSCME Cultural Workers United campaign.
