Material Handlers Join Forces with Teamsters Local 117

The workers at Mill Rock Packaging have taken a decisive step toward enhanced workplace representation. In a unanimous decision, the material handlers voted to join Teamsters Local 117, joining their colleagues in a unified effort for better labor conditions.

Having become part of an existing bargaining unit, these workers will now collaborate with press and assistant press operators, floor help, pre-press, plate makers, and sheeter operators who were already under the union's wing.

"We are proud of these workers for sticking together through this process," stated Paul Dascher, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 117. "Our goal is to make sure their concerns are addressed at the bargaining table. We look forward to working with this group to outline their demands and negotiate a contract they can be proud of."

The material handlers' motivations for organizing included seeking workplace protections, better wages, affordable health insurance, and improved retirement benefits. Curtiss Jackson, a material handler, noted the significance of this development, "With this step, our union grows stronger. Now that everyone in our department will be represented by the Teamsters, I believe we will be treated more fairly."

Teamsters Local 117 now represents 19,000 workers in Washington State across diverse sectors in both public and private domains. Additional details about their initiatives can be found at Teamsters117.org.
