New U.S. Labor Secretary Gains Support from Key Union Leader
Washington, D.C. – March 10, 2025 – North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) has expressed strong endorsement for Lori Chavez-DeRemer's confirmation as the new U.S. Secretary of Labor. NABTU President Sean McGarvey highlighted Chavez-DeRemer's personal connection to union values, noting her background as the daughter of a Teamster, which shapes her appreciation for the role of unions and working families in America's growth.
According to McGarvey, Chavez-DeRemer's bipartisan approach and dedication to advancing workforce development, maintaining fair wages, and providing better access to stable middle-class careers make her a suitable leader for the Department of Labor. He stated, “NABTU applauds the confirmation of Lori Chavez-DeRemer as the next U.S. Secretary of Labor. As the proud daughter of a Teamster, she understands firsthand the vital role unions and working families play in building a stronger, more prosperous America.”
With infrastructure renewal, the revival of domestic manufacturing, and economic shifts in focus, McGarvey emphasized the necessity of robust leadership in the Department of Labor. He anticipates Chavez-DeRemer will advocate for workers' rights, endorse equitable wages, and oversee the safety of workplaces across various sectors. "Her bipartisan leadership and steadfast commitment to workforce development, prevailing wage, and expanding access to middle-class, family-sustaining careers make her an exceptional choice for this role," McGarvey remarked.
McGarvey also acknowledged Chavez-DeRemer's support for the building trades and the organization’s high-standard Registered Apprenticeship programs. He expressed confidence in her ability to enhance these initiatives and uphold essential labor protections such as Davis-Bacon. "We are confident that under her leadership, the Department will strengthen Registered apprenticeship programs, expand career opportunities in the skilled trades, and uphold Davis-Bacon protections and the dignity of work for all Americans," he added.
Through collaboration with Chavez-DeRemer and her team, NABTU aims to push forward policies that empower the workforce, uphold labor standards, and create economic opportunities for families throughout the nation.
