Significant Progress Achieved for Waste Management Workers in Southern California
(LOS ANGELES) – In a significant development for labor unions, 700 Waste Management workers in Los Angeles and Orange counties have successfully ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the backing of Teamsters Local 396. This agreement follows closely on the heels of another successful contract ratification by 1,900 Republic Services Teamsters from Local 396.
Victor Mineros, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 396 and Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division, emphasized the hard work of the members, stating, “Congratulations to the rank-and-file Teamsters whose engagement and energy were key to securing such a strong contract.” Despite this achievement, he noted that Local 396 is continuing its efforts to negotiate equally strong agreements with other regional waste management companies.
The union is actively working to secure new contracts for hundreds of workers across companies including WARE Disposal, Athens Services, CR&R, and Park Disposal, indicating a broader movement for improved labor conditions in the area.
Highlighting the challenges faced, Luis Isordia, a relief driver at Waste Management, remarked, “This win did not come easily. Waste Management is a massive corporation and has tons of money to throw around to try and weaken us and our union.” However, he praised his fellow workers for their unity, which was instrumental in achieving a deal that ensures respect both during and outside of work hours.
As the largest sanitation corporation in the United States, Waste Management reported revenues of $25.2 billion last year. The Teamsters Union represents a significant portion of Waste Management workers nationwide, advocating for fair wages and working conditions.
Established in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters advocates for 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For more details, visit Teamster.org. Follow their updates on X @Teamsters and on Facebook at Facebook.com/teamsters.
