AFSCME President Supports Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act
AFSCME President, Lee Saunders, has expressed strong support for the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act, recently introduced in both the U.S. House and Senate. Saunders described public service workers as the heartbeat of our communities, especially during crises. He highlighted that in many states, these workers cannot negotiate their employment terms.
“Senator Hirono, Representatives Cartwright and Fitzpatrick have reintroduced the bipartisan Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act. This significant legislation will give public service workers nationwide collective bargaining rights, without which they are unable to fight for fair pay, improved benefits, and safer working conditions. This is especially critical for recruiting and retaining qualified personnel in public service positions.”
“Collective bargaining has the power to protect and enhance vital services, such as keeping libraries open, equipping sanitation workers adequately, and ensuring sufficient support for students with disabilities. As public services face severe staffing shortages and turnover, it is essential to strengthen this workforce. The Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act can do this and we urge Congress to pass this legislation.”
