Rallying for Change: Chicago's Push to Revamp Delivery Regulations

In a vibrant display of unity, Amazon Teamsters and supportive groups congregated outside the iconic Chicago City Hall, pressing for legislative action on the Delivery Protection Act. This preemptive rally took place ahead of a Subject Matter Hearing involving the License and Consumer Protection & Workforce Development committees.

At the heart of this legislation, put forth by Alderwoman Julia Ramirez, is the requirement for delivery companies in Chicago to officially register their last-mile delivery operations. The act also seeks to eliminate subcontracting methods, particularly targeting Amazon's "Delivery Service Partner" (DSP) program, which critics say is used to prevent unionization and avoid accountability in the event of mishaps.

Randy Korgan, the Teamsters Amazon Division Director, emphasized the growing demand for Amazon's accountability: “The momentum to hold Amazon accountable is growing nationwide. Amazon Teamsters in Chicagoland are now taking the baton and showing Amazon that we will not stop.” He further stressed the urgency for the City Council to safeguard both Chicago's communities and its delivery workforce by enacting the Delivery Protection Act.

Alderwoman Ramirez, reflecting on the drastic shift in shopping habits facilitated by companies like Amazon, noted, “The convenience of same-day delivery cannot come at the expense of workers or the safety of our neighborhoods. That’s why I ask my colleagues to support the Delivery Protection Act.”

The proposed bill is inspired by a similar legislative success in New York City, which saw overwhelming support from both its City Council and Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The Teamsters Union is advocating for Chicago’s City Council to follow suit and enact the delivery reform swiftly.

Melanie Perez, an Amazon Teamster from Skokie, Illinois, voiced her determination: “When we saw the success of Amazon Teamsters with the Delivery Protection Act in New York, we were inspired to do the same thing in Chicago. We can’t hold Amazon accountable by sitting on the sidelines. I’m proud to join my fellow Amazon Teamsters in leading the fight to pass this critical bill in Chicago.”
