Teamsters Secure Major Contractual Wins for Smithfield Workers
In a significant labor victory, over 300 members of Teamsters Local 822 in Smithfield, Virginia have successfully negotiated a robust new contract with Smithfield Foods. These workers, who are integral to the production of popular ham and bacon products under brands like Armour, Gwaltney, and Eckrich, have achieved substantial improvements in their working conditions and compensation.
Key components of the new agreement include a 12 percent wage increase accompanied by back pay—an important gain for the workforce. Additionally, the contract effectively prevents proposed hikes in health care costs and ensures that workers receive pay for specific non-disciplinary absences, thereby providing them with enhanced financial security.
James Wright, the President of Teamsters Local 822 and Vice President At-Large of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, emphasized the power of collective bargaining, stating, “This contract is proof that when workers stand together and say ‘no’ to a bad deal, they can force real change. Our members rejected a contract that didn’t meet the moment, stayed united, and came back with something stronger. This agreement sets a new standard at the Smithfield facility.”
One of the pivotal improvements in the contract is the elimination of a long-standing policy that previously required workers to use their breaks during the first hour of their shift due to mechanical breakdowns. In addition to this, a new Maintenance Training Program Subcommittee has been established to broaden training opportunities and ensure fair compensation for skilled trades workers.
Reflecting on the win, Michele Putnam, a seasoned worker with 22 years of experience at Smithfield Foods and a member of Local 822, shared, “We weren’t going to settle for less than what we’ve earned. We stuck together and made sure this contract reflects the work we do every day. This will give us more stability on the job and more security for our families.”
As a prominent representative organization, Teamsters Local 822 supports over 3,000 workers across the Tidewater Area spanning various industries. More information is available on their website at www.teamsters822.com.
