When: Walkout at 12:01 A.M., additional pickets at 6:00 A.M. on Monday, June 1
Background and Context
The roots of discontent date back to 2008 when American Axle workers faced significant concessions to keep the plant operational amid the Great Recession. During that period, employees who once earned up to $29 per hour saw their wages reduced to $14.50. Despite the passing of 18 years, wages have not fully rebounded, currently maxing out at $22 per hour after a five-year scale progression. Adjusted for inflation, current wages are nearly half of what they were before 2008.
Economic Disparities
Despite the workers' sacrifices, American Axle has reported a decade-long profit of $8.4 billion as a Tier 1 supplier to General Motors. Over this prosperous period, the company's CEO earned $111 million, while the top five executives collectively received nearly $231 million. In stark contrast, UAW members at the Three Rivers plant report difficulties meeting basic living expenses, with some resorting to sleeping in their vehicles.
