Teamsters Local 853 Achieves Major Contract Win for Crystal Creamery Workers
In a notable victory for labor rights, drivers and loaders at Crystal Creamery in Oakland, California, part of Teamsters Local 853, have successfully negotiated a favorable four-year contract. This new agreement, which covers employees responsible for distributing dairy products across Northern California, marks a significant step forward in terms of wages, back pay, and benefits.
The contract offers substantial wage increases and ensures better workplace protections for the involved employees. Among the most significant changes is the reinstatement of annual route bidding for drivers, alongside a clear definition of their routes.
Steve Beck, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 853, commented on the achievement, emphasizing the strength of the union's collective action. “This contract delivers real improvements on everything from wages to job protections,” Beck stated. “The company came to the bargaining table looking to shift more costs onto workers, but our members stood together and secured a strong agreement. I want to thank our bargaining committee for their hard work and dedication throughout negotiations.”
Crystal Creamery driver Jerome Nelson, a member of Local 853, expressed his satisfaction with the contract, highlighting the newfound autonomy over work schedules. “This is the first time in years we’ve had real say over our routes and schedules,” said Nelson. “We stuck together and ended up with a contract that respects the work we do. Getting guaranteed yearly bidding back was a big win for everyone here.”
Teamsters Local 853, representing nearly 15,000 members across various industries in Northern California, continues its commitment to advocate for workers' rights. For further details, visit teamsters853.org.
