In a decisive move, over 160 drivers affiliated with UNFI in Arizona, California, Oregon, and Utah have ratified a compelling five-year contract. This agreement, shaped by 12 Teamsters locals, ushers in significant enhancements in areas such as wages, pension contributions, and health benefits, alongside improvements in seniority and holiday pay.
Conor Tobin, a business agent at Teamsters Local 150 and lead negotiator, emphasized the power of solidarity, stating, “This contract proves what’s possible when workers stand together. Through coordinated bargaining, we won the strongest possible agreement for our members at UNFI.”
The Teamsters union, which represents a substantial workforce of over 5,000 UNFI employees across the nation, has grown by more than 2,500 members since 2022.
Arturo Lemus, a UNFI driver from Teamsters Local 848 in California, remarked on the groundbreaking nature of the deal: “Our new contract raises the bar at UNFI and demonstrates why every worker at this company should organize with the Teamsters. The wages, benefits, and protections we won are game changers.”
Currently, newly organized UNFI workers at five Teamsters locals are engaged in negotiations to secure their initial contracts. In various regions including Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, Teamsters are striving for the same leading standards achieved on the West Coast.
Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations: “We’re bargaining from a position of strength. UNFI must negotiate with our newly organized units in good faith — or we’ll hold them accountable. The ball is in their court.”
