Paraprofessional Gail Detty Creates Safe Haven for Students in Ohio
Zanesville Paraprofessional Provides More Than Academic Support
In Zanesville, Ohio, one paraprofessional is redefining what it means to be an educator. Gail Detty, who works at Zanesville Community High School, goes beyond her role to offer a nurturing environment for students who face challenges in conventional educational settings.
Detty, a proud member of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE), ensures her students receive more than just academic help. Her commitment is evident in the way she talks about them, referring to them as "smart, kind, and wonderful individuals" who thrive in a supportive atmosphere. This dedication has earned her the AFSCME’s Never Quit Service Award.
“We believe there are many components to education, and academics is certainly one of them. … We are a big family here. We'll clothe you, feed you, and do whatever we have to do to make your life easier,” Detty remarks, emphasizing the holistic approach she takes in her work.
Common misconceptions about the role of paraprofessionals are put to rest by Detty, who highlights the deep emotional connections formed with students. “They don't know the emotional impact, how much those kids start to depend on you, because you're their safe place,” she explains. Her genuine care is palpable when she says, “When I say, 'I love you,' I mean it."
Colleague Jenny Frey, an intervention specialist and fellow member of OAPSE, praises Detty's influence. "She taught me how to be a teacher. She never comes from a place of judgment. She's always ready to listen and love people for exactly who they are," says Frey. Detty’s positive outlook and approach have made her a beacon of light within the school community, inspiring those around her.
