Kaiser Mental Health Strike: Ongoing Fight for System Reform

The new year commenced with renewed efforts to address the challenges within Kaiser’s mental health care system. While Kaiser promoted its theme of "shifting paradigms in care" during the Rose Parade, members of the community were provided with informational leaflets to explain the ongoing strike.

In December, reports from an average of four Kaiser members per day highlighted issues with the mental health care system. These stories emphasize a persistent pattern of delayed, denied, and canceled mental health care appointments, which existed even prior to the strike.

Picket Line Developments

  • This week, the strike line in San Diego attracted media attention, with both Fox and ABC San Diego conducting interviews. Support also came from the San Diego Labor Council, which generously donated groceries to the strikers.
  • Across various locations, morale remains strong as community support continues to bolster the resolve of those on the picket lines.

Hardship Funds and Applications

Applications for hardship funds are due by Friday at 11:59 p.m. with disbursement scheduled for the following Friday. Detailed rules for disbursement and the application form are available online.

Efforts to raise funds continue, and the community is encouraged to share donation links within their networks. Currently, disbursements are capped at $250 weekly as the committee works through challenges in managing the distribution process.

Visual Updates and Social Media Engagement

A gallery of images from the picket lines is available, with more updates posted on NUHW’s social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok.

Upcoming Events and Negotiations

Negotiations with Kaiser are set to resume on Thursday, January 9, marking the first bargaining session in months. Despite this, significant movement in management’s proposals is not anticipated. Additionally, a virtual town hall for all members is scheduled for Sunday, January 12 at 10 a.m., with registration details to follow via Mobilize.
