CVS Workers in Virginia Vote for Strike Authorization Amid Contract Dispute
In an escalating situation at CVS's Fredericksburg, Virginia distribution center, over 500 workers have voted to authorize a strike if contract negotiations falter. Represented by Teamsters Local 592, these drivers and warehouse workers are demanding a fair deal in the face of CVS's push for benefit reductions. The current contract expires on April 30.
“If CVS keeps pushing concessions and refusing to take bargaining seriously, we will be forced on the picket line May 1,” stated Chris Donald, a long-time Local 592 member with 38 years at the warehouse. “No one wants a strike, but if the company comes after our hard-earned benefits, we will have no choice but to fight back.”
CVS Health, recognized as the largest retail pharmacy chain in the U.S., reported substantial financial success in 2025 with a revenue of $402.1 billion and profits nearing $1.8 billion. Despite this, the company is reportedly intent on reducing affordable healthcare and other essential worker benefits.
Jim Smith, President of Local 592, criticized the company's approach: “It is outrageous for a company built on healthcare to try to gut workers’ health coverage. CVS is choosing greed over its workforce. We will not accept a concessionary contract, and we will fight to protect every benefit our members have earned.”
The Teamsters, a union representing numerous CVS employees nationwide, have had previous successes in similar disputes. Last year, 900 Teamsters in La Habra, California, achieved a strong contract featuring significant wage increases and preserved benefits, after threatening to strike (learn more).
Local 592 aims to replicate these achievements, advocating for contracts that match those acquired by other CVS Teamsters. A strike would potentially impact CVS operations across the Mid-Atlantic region, including key areas like Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, warned CVS of potential consequences: “CVS needs to understand that this union will not allow concessions from a company this profitable. If CVS keeps heading down this path, they will face the full force of the Teamsters Union. Our members are ready.”
Established in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million members across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For further details, visit their official site at Teamster.org, or follow them on social media via @Teamsters and Facebook.
