Horizon Air Flight Attendants Seek Federal Mediation for Fair Contract
Horizon Air Flight Attendants Seek Federal Mediation for Contract Negotiations
SEATTLE (January 21, 2025) — Horizon Air flight attendants, under the representation of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), have initiated a request for federal mediation, aiming for a fair contract agreement.
Lisa Davis-Warren, President of Horizon AFA, emphasized the need for equitable compensation, stating, "Flight Attendants at Horizon Air and in the regional airlines deserve fair compensation. The company needs to recognize the contributions we have made to its continued growth. We are hopeful that with the help of a federal mediator we will work with urgency to get the pay, benefits, and scheduling provisions we have earned."
Horizon Air functions as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alaska Airlines. Despite their roles at the regional airline, Horizon flight attendants' pay and working conditions are ultimately determined by Alaska Airlines' management. This has resulted in Horizon attendants receiving substantially lower wages compared to their mainline colleagues, despite delivering equivalent services.
Efforts to secure significant pay raises for all flight attendants within the group have not been met with substantial offers from management. The existing two-tiered business model persists, which, according to the union, exploits regional flight attendants.
The request for federal mediation involves the National Mediation Board, which will oversee the negotiation process. This step falls under the Railway Labor Act, where the Board will appoint a federal mediator and organize mediation sessions.
The Association of Flight Attendants is dedicated exclusively to flight attendant advocacy, improving the profession through enhanced wages, benefits, and conditions. Representing 55,000 flight attendants, AFA is part of the larger Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. More details can be found at www.afacwa.org.
