AFSCME members serve bravely amid devastating Los Angeles wildfires

Los Angeles Wildfires: The Unsung Heroes Keeping the City Afloat

The recent wildfires in Los Angeles have left a trail of destruction, impacting tens of thousands of homes and causing numerous fatalities. As the city grapples with this calamity, AFSCME members are playing a crucial role in aiding their communities, despite facing their own personal challenges.

In the midst of this devastation, AFSCME members have showcased remarkable dedication. Members of Local 119 have been instrumental in maintaining the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s equipment, including fire engines and helicopters that are vital for combating the blazes.

Local 858 members, serving as maintenance workers and more in Pasadena, have been actively clearing debris left by the fires. Their local president, Pedro Ibarra, stated, “Our community was hit hard by fires and strong winds, which destroyed many homes, including those of some of our union members. We’re working tirelessly on the front lines to ensure the safety of Pasadena and Altadena residents.”

Ibarra further emphasized, “With the help of city workers and volunteers, we’re focused on cleaning up and restoring our neighborhoods. Pasadena is a vibrant community, and we’re committed to bringing it back to its beautiful, welcoming best.”

Local 3090 members, who handle police dispatching duties, have been tirelessly connecting residents with essential emergency services, ensuring timely assistance during this crisis.

Recreation centers across Los Angeles have become temporary shelters for fire victims, thanks to the efforts of Parks and Recreation Department workers from Locals 901 and 741.

The health care sector has also been on the front lines, with UNAC/UHCP health care professionals providing critical care to those injured by the fires.

AFSCME NOW remains committed to documenting and sharing the experiences of its members as they navigate this ongoing disaster.
