GM invests $888M in Tonawanda plant for next-gen V-8 engine production

GM Commits $888 Million to Tonawanda Propulsion Plant

TONAWANDA, NY – General Motors has pledged an $888 million investment in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant, further emphasizing the company's focus on enhancing its production capabilities. This investment aims to bolster the development of their next generation V-8 engines, which are integral to GM's full-size trucks and SUVs.

Union leaders, who have long advocated for more support in UAW facilities, welcomed the announcement. UAW Vice President Mike Booth commented, “This enormous investment is exactly what we’ve been calling for. Skilled UAW members, like members of UAW Local 774, make GM’s profits, so it’s great to see the company investing back into its union workforce so we can keep building quality, world-class products.”

Highlighting the broader implications of GM's decision, UAW President Shawn Fain remarked, “It’s time for Ford and Stellantis to learn from GM. GM is showing that it makes good business sense for major corporations to reverse course on the destructive race-to-the-bottom trade policies that have wreaked havoc on workers and destroyed blue-collar towns and cities across America.”

This recent development follows GM's earlier $579 million pledge to manufacture the same V-8 engine at the Flint Engine Operations site, represented by UAW Local 659. The Flint investment was part of a successful negotiation achieved through the union's 2023 national contract and the impactful Stand Up Strike.
