Hard Rock Casino Dealers Secure Union Representation

In an assertive move for workplace representation, 221 dealers and dual-rate employees at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Bristol, Virginia, have opted to join Teamsters Local 519. Their collective aim is to negotiate a first contract that promises better pay, enhanced benefits, and a stronger say in their workplace conditions.

Tommy Blitsch, the Director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, emphasized the importance of unity among casino employees, stating, “Dealers and dual rates are the backbone of the gaming floor, and when they stand together, they have the power to win real improvements on the job.” The Teamsters are committed to assisting these workers in their pursuit of a favorable contract.

The newly unionized group includes professionals skilled in managing table games such as blackjack, roulette, and poker. Their responsibilities range from game management to handling payouts and ensuring fair play.

Wes Trotterchaud, President of Local 519, praised the collective effort that led to the unionization, highlighting the crucial role played by their organizer, Marty Hinch. “It was a team effort from start to finish, and we had the best team to fight for representation,” Trotterchaud remarked.

Anthony Keen, a member of the new union, expressed enthusiasm about the benefits of joining the Teamsters, saying, “Choosing to join the Teamsters was about securing respect, stability, and a voice on the casino floor.”

Across the nation, the Teamsters represent close to 6,000 casino and hotel employees, reinforcing their longstanding advocacy for fair labor practices. Established in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters stands as a major union with over 1.3 million members across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
