Teamsters Local 727 Initiates Strike at Brookfield Zoo Over Contract Dispute
In a significant move, more than 100 workers from Teamsters Local 727 at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago have initiated a strike over unresolved labor issues. Beginning at 5 a.m. today, employees, excluding animal care specialists, joined the picket line. The specialists will participate once the care plan for the zoo's animals is finalized.
The labor action follows an announcement made on May 1, when the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) revealed that the promise of an alternative healthcare plan was unfounded. Management admitted that no suitable replacement for the existing union health plan was included in their final offer.
John Coli, Jr, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727, expressed concerns about the ongoing negotiations and the zoo management's tactics. “It’s clear that management is trying to slow roll an agreement on a plan for the animal care specialists to provide essential care to the animals during a work stoppage. This is a blatant attempt to interfere with these members’ lawful right to strike,” he stated. He further urged the public to refrain from visiting the zoo, citing the absence of several animals from exhibits and the lack of custodial and maintenance staff.
The union expressed its willingness to negotiate by putting forward a comprehensive settlement offer. However, the zoo's management concluded talks without offering a counterproposal, stalling any progress toward a resolution.
Teamsters Local 727, representing around 10,000 members in the Chicago region, continues to advocate for fair labor practices. For further information, visit teamsterslocal727.org.
