Architectural Historian Diane Laffin Wins Never Quit Service Award
Architectural Historian Plays a Vital Role in Preserving Nebraska's Heritage
Diane Laffin's work sparks fascination among those she encounters, and it's clear to see the allure of her profession. As an architectural historian with the Nebraska State Historical Society, Laffin's role is crucial in ensuring federal projects respect and preserve cultural and historic sites within her community. Her evaluations of sites, such as those slated for development by the U.S. Department of Transportation, involve determining the historical significance of the built environment.
"I’m a person who could be out there discovering a new historic site," Laffin explains. "I’m out there on the front lines, watching these things every day. And it’s important to have somebody out there doing that. Imagine what could be lost."
In recognition of her dedication, Laffin, who is affiliated with the Nebraska Association of Public Employees (NAPE/AFSCME Local 61), has been honored with the Never Quit Service Award. This accolade celebrates public service workers who exceed expectations in improving their communities.
Despite the demanding nature of her work, Laffin acknowledges the challenge of meeting deadlines and managing her workload. She believes deeply in the importance of uncovering Nebraska's untapped historical treasures, which she sees as essential to community identity and unity.
“I love my job so much,” Laffin shares. “It has to deal with history every day. And that to me is indescribable.”
