Ángel Dieppa honored for dedication to Puerto Rico's marine ecosystem
Oceanographer in Puerto Rico Dedicates Career to Environmental Conservation
Environmental stewardship is a shared duty, and Ángel Dieppa embraces his role with dedication. As an oceanographer for Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, Dieppa is deeply involved in examining the marine ecosystem.
In his words, “It is important to study the environment because it is our home... the support of all living beings.”
Dieppa leads a team that carries out extensive monitoring of water quality, marine flora and fauna, and notable species such as nurse sharks. Additionally, they observe the coastal mangroves, which have been part of a restorative program since 2019. “Their root systems serve as a nursery for many species, fish, plants,” he explains. The threat of rising sea levels is causing these crucial ecosystems to shift inland.
For his exceptional commitment, Dieppa, who is affiliated with Servidores Público’s Unidos de Puerto Rico (SPUPR/AFSCME Council 95), has been honored with the Never Quit Service Award. This accolade is given to public service workers who significantly contribute to their communities.
The work Dieppa undertakes is not without peril. He notes the potential dangers: “When we dive, there are strong currents that can drag us and take us away from the boat. We can get lost.” Despite these risks, his passion for the environment fuels his perseverance.
Dieppa reflects on his motivation, sharing, “I love the environment, I love nature... Since I first saw this place, I was astonished by the beauty of this ecosystem. I look back and remember that moment when I thought that I would like to work in this place. Now that I’m able to do it, it continues to motivate me.”
