In Detroit, a significant development has unfolded for members of Teamsters Local 283, who have successfully concluded a prolonged 101-day work stoppage at Marathon Petroleum's Detroit refinery. After facing resistance in negotiations from their employer, the Teamsters have ratified a new contract that ends the strike and brings to light the challenges and triumphs of the past months.

Steve Hicks, President of Local 283, expressed the significance of the agreement, noting, “Despite raking in billions in profits each year, Marathon Petroleum fought Teamsters for more than a year on a contract that rewards those who make them profitable.” He emphasized that the strike was pivotal in securing a fair deal for the workers who are essential to the refinery's operations, particularly as the holiday season approaches.

This newly ratified contract comes with substantial benefits for the workers, including a 24.5 percent wage increase over its duration. In addition to wage improvements, the agreement ensures that health care coverage is fully funded by Marathon Petroleum. Workers will also enjoy union security and access to the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund.

Jeff Tricoff, a relief operator and shop steward for Local 283, reflected on the solidarity and strength demonstrated throughout the strike, stating, “After 101 days of showing the biggest oil refiner in America what it means to be Teamsters strong, we’ve secured a contract.” Tricoff added that the strike showcased the power of unity among the workers from different departments, adopting the motto ‘One union, one contract’ as they returned to work together.

Rocco Calo, Director of the Teamsters Industrial Trades Division, praised the perseverance of the Marathon workers, highlighting their dedication: “These men and women stood shoulder to shoulder, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through inclement weather and demanded their employer negotiate an industry-leading contract.” He thanked the negotiating committee, Local 283, and International Vice President for the Central Region, Tom Erickson, for their efforts in securing the agreement.

Teamsters Local 283 represents a diverse group of over 800 workers across various industries within the Detroit area, showcasing their commitment to improving working conditions for their members.
