Einride to Supply 75 Electric Trucks to Amazon's Relay Freight Network

The Facts -

  • Einride is integrating 75 electric trucks into Amazon’s Relay network in the US.
  • Einride will provide charging infrastructure but owns and manages the trucks.
  • This partnership supports Amazon's net-zero carbon emission goal by 2040.

In a significant move towards sustainable logistics, Swedish startup Einride is set to incorporate 75 of its electric heavy-duty trucks into Amazon's Relay freight system. This strategic agreement, announced on Tuesday, marks Einride’s entry into the e-commerce behemoth's intricate operations. Additionally, this deal also involves the deployment of charging infrastructure across five U.S. locations.

While Amazon will not directly purchase or manage these electric trucks, Einride will retain ownership and operation through its proprietary Saga AI software. Drivers within Amazon's Relay freight network, an app created in 2017 to connect truck drivers with Amazon hauling tasks, can utilize these trucks.

Roozbeh Charli, who assumed the role of CEO nearly a year ago, expressed the significance of this collaboration, stating, “By deploying our intelligent platform within one of the world’s most sophisticated logistics networks, we are accelerating growth, while continuing to build industry-leading operational expertise.”

Einride is recognized for its innovative approach to freight, operating a fleet of approximately 200 electric trucks for companies such as Heineken, PepsiCo, and Carlsberg Sweden across Europe, North America, and the UAE. The company has also pioneered cab-less autonomous pod-like trucks, though these are not part of the Amazon agreement.

This partnership comes at a pivotal time for Einride as it is nearing the completion of a merger with Legato Merger Corp., a move anticipated to lead to a public offering soon. Further details on this development can be found here.

While Amazon, with its massive market capitalization of $2.7 trillion, might not rely heavily on this deal, the integration supports its ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. An Amazon spokesperson commented on this initiative, stating, “This rollout is an important step forward in addressing one of the toughest challenges we face in decarbonizing our transportation network — electrifying heavy-duty trucking. We’re excited to continue to collaborate with Einride and learn from these operations as the trucks hit the road.”
