Members of the Teamsters Local 533 have ratified a new five-year agreement with Waste Management. The contract, covering over 250 workers in Lyon, Storey, and Washoe counties in Nevada, includes significant wage increases and improved benefits.

"I want to congratulate our members and the negotiating committee for their unity and perseverance that secured this strong contract,” mentioned Debbie Calkins, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 533. "Our members achieved life-changing wage and pension raises, along with premier Teamsters health care benefits."

Local 533 President Gary Watson adds, “This contract is a testament to the power of rank-and-file Teamsters and the significance of collective action. It highlights the discrepancy between union and nonunion workers, serving as a stepping stone for organizing other waste workers in our region."

The new agreement promises an immediate $4 wage increase upfront, with an additional $1.25 yearly over the contract’s length. On top of the substantial pay rise, the contract ups pension contributions by $1.25, secures a fair bidding process based on seniority, and provides top-tier Teamsters health care.

Delbert Lopez, a 46-year Teamster and Waste Management mechanic, shared his satisfaction, “We made it clear to the company that we were prepared to fight for what we deserve. Our unity won significantly higher wages and improved benefits for all."
