UCB Pledges to Enhance U.S. Biopharmaceutical Landscape with Strategic Agreement
BRUSSELS and ATLANTA, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — UCB, a prominent name in global biopharmaceuticals, recently announced a significant step towards reinforcing patient access to critical medicines. The company has forged an agreement with the U.S. government to bolster investment in the research, development, and manufacturing of drugs aimed at severe neurological and immunological disorders.
"At UCB, we are guided by a clear purpose: to create value for patients now and into the future," expressed UCB's CEO Jean-Christophe Tellier. "Working with the U.S. Government reflects our commitment to support access to medicines for people who need them, while continuing to advance the science and innovation that can make a meaningful difference for people living with severe diseases. These priorities, and our contribution to the United States through research, manufacturing, and highly skilled jobs, are essential to our long-term commitment to patients."
Key Initiatives Under the Agreement
- Adopting a balanced pricing strategy for new medicines across developed markets
- Engaging in the Government's GENEROUS program
- Continuing investments in U.S.-based manufacturing to ensure medicines are produced domestically
Earlier this year, UCB announced plans to expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint with a new biologics facility in Georgia, marking the company's largest manufacturing investment. This project is projected to contribute $5 billion to the U.S. economy and generate over 330 permanent, skilled jobs, enhancing the country’s biopharmaceutical manufacturing capacity and supply chain security.
The agreement ensures UCB's strategic execution in delivering innovative treatments while avoiding Section 232 Pharmaceutical tariffs on current and future products. However, the specifics of this agreement remain undisclosed.
Strengthening Medicine Supply Chains
Furthering its commitment to public health, UCB is set to donate Keppra® (levetiracetam), a medicine designated by the FDA as essential, to the ASPR's National Stockpile. This contribution aims to fortify the resilience of the essential medicine supply chain in the U.S., enhancing national preparedness and ensuring patient access to essential treatments when necessary.
UCB's Impact in the U.S.
UCB has been a cornerstone in the U.S. biopharmaceutical sector, with extensive presence across various states, including California, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Washington, and Washington, D.C. The company employs nearly 2,000 people in the U.S., focusing heavily on research and development. Since 2017, UCB has grown its U.S. workforce by over 70%, and more than a quarter of its U.S. employees are dedicated to R&D. Over the last decade, UCB's strategic acquisitions and partnerships have led to 15 FDA approvals, reinforcing their commitment to innovation and job creation.
