Governor Morrisey Unveils Significant Funding for Infrastructure Projects in Beckley Region

BECKLEY, W.Va. - In a significant push to enhance community infrastructure and development, Governor Patrick Morrisey, alongside local authorities, announced a substantial financial injection of $637,000 from federal and state grants. This funding is earmarked for five pivotal projects aimed at transforming transportation and pedestrian safety in the area.

"Not all infrastructure is highways," said Governor Morrisey. "Sometimes it's a sidewalk that helps a child get to school safely. Sometimes it's a revitalized Main Street that brings people back downtown. Those investments improve quality of life, strengthen local economies, and build the kind of communities where families want to live, work, and raise the next generation."

The allocation, secured through collaboration with local leaders, the federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), and the Recreational Trails Program, focuses on enhancing pedestrian safety, promoting active transportation, and improving outdoor accessibility.

Targeted Projects and Their Purpose

The $637,000 investment covers the following projects, each selected to boost community connectivity and improve living standards:

  • City of Beckley ($125,000): This funding will initiate the crucial design and engineering phase for new sidewalks in the downtown area, particularly along Main Street. These improvements aim to make Uptown Beckley safer and more welcoming for shoppers, visitors, and local businesses.
  • Town of Fayetteville ($387,500 total): A substantial portion of $325,000 will be used to construct the Second Avenue Pedestrian Bridge, reconnecting historically divided neighborhoods. An additional $62,500 is allocated for essential sidewalk upgrades throughout the town.
  • City of Hinton ($75,000): The grant will fund the design phase of a significant sidewalk project, updating walkways from the intersection of Pleasant Street and Second Avenue to Main and Washington streets.
  • Twin Falls Resort State Park ($50,000): This investment will support the creation of a new, paved, quarter-mile nature trail near the park lodge, ensuring accessibility for seniors, families with strollers, and those with mobility challenges.

These infrastructure enhancements are part of a broader strategy to spur economic growth within the state. Since October alone, the Morrisey Administration has been instrumental in attracting $12.8 billion in private-sector investments, with expectations of generating over 13,600 jobs in local communities.
