Pennsylvania Governor Announces $274M for Water Infrastructure Projects
Governor Josh Shapiro recently disclosed a $274 million investment for 30 water infrastructure projects across 22 counties through the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST). The projects aim to replace lead or corrosive pipes, rehabilitate aging systems, extend service to more communities, and reduce environmental contaminants.
"Our federal partners and the tireless efforts of PENNVEST have allowed $12 billion to be invested in securing our clean water infrastructure and the health and safety of Pennsylvanians," said Shapiro.
The funding originates from state funds approved by voters, Growing Greener funds, Marcellus Legacy funds, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act stimulus funds, federal grant awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments, and recycled loan repayments from previous PENNVEST funding awards.
"For over 36 years, PENNVEST has been committed to providing resources for clean water across Pennsylvania. We've seen communities grow, aged towns revitalized, and farmers adopting more responsible land management practices," stated PENNVEST Chairman Dr. Brian Regli. "Today, we cross the $12 billion mark in clean water projects investment - a monumental achievement and a continued promise to ensure the health and safety of Pennsylvanians."
