Shapiro Admin Transforms Military Base into Business-Ready Sites in PA
Former Military Base in Berks County to Be Transformed into Business Hub
In a move to promote economic development in Berks County, the Shapiro Administration has announced an initiative to prepare former military and auto body sites for new business ventures. The Berks County Industrial Development Authority will utilize a $13,687 grant from the Industrial Site Reuse Program (ISRP) to conduct an environmental assessment of three lots within the Berks Park development area.
The focus of this transformation is on a site that once served as a military base in the 1940s, along with locations previously used for auto body work. These areas are set to become "shovel-ready" sites, meaning they will be prepped and ready for immediate development by interested businesses. This initiative aims to make the transition from old to new uses as seamless as possible, facilitating economic growth in the region.
ISRP grants are integral to this process, providing the necessary funds to evaluate the environmental conditions of these sites. The assessments will determine any potential contamination and outline the necessary steps for remediation. This ensures that the sites will meet all environmental standards before businesses begin development.
Officials from the PA Department of Community & Economic Development expressed optimism about the project, highlighting the potential for job creation and increased business activity in Berks County. The reuse of these sites is seen as a strategic move to revitalize the area and attract new enterprises.
