Georgia Launches Commission for 250th Anniversary of Independence
Marking a significant milestone in American history, Georgia has initiated the Georgia US250 Commission to honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Georgia, one of the original 13 colonies, played a pivotal role in the nation's quest for independence, which will be celebrated nationwide on July 4, 2026.
Governor Brian P. Kemp emphasized Georgia's historical significance, stating, “As the 13th colony, Georgia was represented by three courageous signers of the Declaration of Independence who pledged their very lives to support it. To this day, brave and proud Georgians continue to put their lives on the line and make significant contributions to American independence.” The Governor encourages Georgians to engage in commemorative activities statewide.
The formation of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission by Congress in 2016 laid the groundwork for such commemorations, encouraging each state to create dedicated commissions. Georgia's effort is spearheaded by Chairman Cameron Bean, with support from notable leaders including W. Todd Groce, Pat Wilson, Mark Jaronski, and Mary McCartin Wearn.
The Georgia US250 Commission calls for involvement from local and county groups across public and private sectors. The aim is to create civic, cultural, educational, and historical events, starting now and continuing through 2026, to reflect on Georgia's contributions and the broader ideals of American independence. An official website, georgia250.com, will serve as a hub for these events and provide resources like marketing toolkits to assist organizers.
W. Todd Groce, CEO of the Georgia Historical Society, remarked on the enduring nature of the American experiment in democracy, urging communities to plan activities that reaffirm the Declaration's principles. He said, “The Commission asks Georgia organizations and communities to plan and share information on their plans for civic activities that will inspire Georgians to renew their commitment to the lofty and timeless ideals embodied in the Declaration of Independence – namely, the equality of all people and their inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
