Union Workers Strike to Demand Fair Wages at Profitable Indiana Casino
In a bold move to secure equitable compensation, over 140 union workers at Caesar’s Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino have initiated a strike. Led by Teamsters Local 89, these workers are challenging the casino's management, accusing them of prioritizing profits over fair employee compensation.
This action comes as the casino, operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, reported a staggering $240 million in revenue last year, positioning it as one of Indiana's most profitable gaming establishments. The striking workers are seeking a contract that not only acknowledges their significant contribution to this success but also ensures adequate retirement benefits and fair wages.
"We're not striking because we want to, but because management has left us no choice," expressed Heather Emily, a cage cashier at the casino. "Our demand is simple: the assurance of financial stability for our families and a dignified retirement. The casino's profits clearly support our requests."
The negotiation process between the workers and the casino owners has been prolonged, with management refusing to concede on key economic issues such as retirement benefits. In response, Fred Zuckerman, Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer, emphasized, “By forcing our members on strike, this company made a serious miscalculation. The Teamsters won’t back down. Our members are united, and we won’t stop until they get what they’ve earned. This strike is the direct result of corporate greed and indifference.”
Avral Thompson, President of Local 89, voiced a firm stance against the casino’s approach, saying, “We’re going to hold management accountable for their greed and blatant disrespect. It’s time for the people who run this casino to recognize the workers who make their profits possible. We’ll do whatever it takes to win what our members deserve.”
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, established in 1903, represents 1.3 million members across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For more information on their activities, visit Teamster.org and follow their updates on X and Facebook at Facebook.com/teamsters.
