In a vibrant demonstration at New York City's City Hall, a coalition of Amazon Teamsters, along with advocacy from influential city leaders, expressed a united call for action. They urged Council Speaker Julie Menin to initiate a vote on the Delivery Protection Act without delay.

The proposed Delivery Protection Act, spearheaded by Councilmember Tiffany Cabán, aims to enforce stricter regulations on delivery companies like Amazon within the city. Key elements of the bill include mandatory registration of facilities and the elimination of subcontracting for last-mile delivery drivers. The legislation enjoys broad support, notably from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a majority in the City Council.

"Amazon is America’s most corrupt white-collar crime syndicate, wasting millions to rob warehouse workers of the right to collectively bargain while designing a nationwide subcontracting scheme to deny employment rights to its entire fleet of delivery drivers," stated Sean M. O’Brien, Teamsters General President. He emphasized the critical role of New York City in Amazon’s operations and the need for it to lead by example in passing this legislation.

Mayor Mamdani, underscoring the need for worker rights, remarked, "The workers who deliver packages to our doors in every kind of weather deserve what every worker deserves: a fair paycheck, dignity on the job and a boss who is held accountable for how they treat their employees."

In a counter-move, Amazon has invested heavily, to the tune of over $8 million, in a campaign against the Act, marking its largest lobbying effort in the region. In response, Amazon workers have intensified grassroots efforts, including public outreach and canvassing, to build support for the bill.

Michael Rolon, representing Teamsters Local 804, expressed confidence, "Amazon may spend millions against us, but no amount of money they spend is a match for Teamsters power and solidarity." He called for urgency in passing the Act.
