In a decisive move to strengthen their collective bargaining power, over 200 corrections officers and support staff at Suffolk County Jail in Boston have opted to join Teamsters Local 25. This significant decision marks the end of years of self-representation for these workers, who are now part of the renowned 1.3 million-strong union.

"Teamsters Local 25 is always proud to stand side by side with workers as they fight for what they deserve," stated Tom Mari, President of Local 25 and Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Joint Council 10. "These workers have a tough job, and our top priority will be to work with them on a contract that addresses safety, fair wages, and worker protections."

Months of discussions between the jail staff and the organizing department of Joint Council 10 laid the groundwork for this week’s vote, which promises to pave the way for a more secure future for the staff. Organizers educated the workers about the implications and benefits of joining Local 25, ultimately leading to this overwhelming decision.

"Together, by joining Teamsters Local 25, we gained the strength, resources, and solidarity needed to protect our work and our future," expressed John Flaherty, a newly inducted member of Local 25 at Suffolk County Jail. "We are excited to join and become Teamsters."

Teamsters Local 25, the largest union in the greater Boston area, now includes these new members among its 13,000-strong workforce. It forms part of the Teamsters Joint Council 10, representing workers throughout New England. For further information, visit teamsterslocal25.com.
