Rodney Major Honored for Dedication to San Diego's Chollas Lake Park

San Diego's Resilient Community: A Year After Historic Floods

In early 2024, an unprecedented rainstorm swept through San Diego, leading to severe flooding that displaced over 1,200 residents and inflicted damage on numerous homes. As the community continues to recover, the dedication of individuals like Rodney Major has significantly contributed to the area's restoration efforts.

The torrential downpour caused Chollas Creek to overflow, impacting Chollas Lake Park. This beloved recreational spot spans 16 acres and is a favorite for activities such as fishing, jogging, and cycling.

Rodney Major, a devoted grounds maintenance worker with nearly 25 years of service, plays a vital role in maintaining the park's beauty. A member of AFSCME Local 127, Major beams with pride as he reflects on his team's accomplishments, especially following the recent completion of flood-related repairs.

“We repaved all the roads that were eroded because of the storms of January 2024,” Major explains. “They had been temporarily patched up, but now they have been repaved smooth and there’s no erosion.”

Supervising park ranger Carey Goldstein commends Major's work ethic and positivity, noting his collaboration with city departments and contractors as evidence of his leadership. “Rodney’s collaboration with various city departments has been essential in completing projects efficiently,” Goldstein states.

Major's dedication has earned him numerous accolades, including being named the City of San Diego’s employee of the year in 2021. Recently, his exceptional service was recognized with the Never Quit Service Award, which honors public service workers who exceed expectations.

Najja Lyon, a senior park ranger, praises Major as a model employee whose efforts have enhanced public perceptions and inter-departmental cooperation. “Rodney Major has exemplified exceptional dedication and initiative in his role … at Chollas Lake Park,” Lyon remarks.

Major's enthusiasm for his work is evident in his collaboration with contractors and his commitment to the community's well-being. “I like building a winning team,” he shares. “I get the satisfaction of seeing the results on the public’s face when they see something that has changed their lives for the better.”
