The Rhode Island General Assembly has successfully passed the S2504A/H7364A, the Rhode Island Warehouse Worker Protection Act, much to the delight of the Teamsters. This new legislation aims to curb the exploitation by major corporations, like Amazon, by regulating warehouse quotas and ensuring greater transparency.
Highlighting the need for this law, Matt Taibi, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 251 in East Providence, remarked, “Amazon and other bad actors who make up the worst employers in our state have been wreaking havoc on workers’ livelihoods and physical well-being for far too long, but we’re putting a stop to in Rhode Island.”
Governor Dan McKee has expressed his intention to sign this bill into law, making Rhode Island the seventh state to adopt such measures. This legislative move follows similar initiatives in California, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Washington, and Connecticut.
Taibi further explained the challenges faced by warehouse workers, stating, “Far too many people who work in warehousing go to work every day and put themselves in harm’s way because of strain or exhaustion, and even then, are told they’re still not abiding by an unknown production standard.” He emphasized the collaborative efforts with legislative allies, including Rep. Evan Shanley and Senate Majority Leader Frank Ciccone, to enhance corporate accountability.
This protective measure follows a series of legislative victories for the Rhode Island Teamsters, including laws passed last session to enhance school bus safety and prevent mandatory attendance at anti-union propaganda meetings.
Teamsters Local 251, representing over 6,200 workers across various industries in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, continues to advocate for worker rights. More information can be found at teamsters251.org.
