New York, New York – Mobilization for Justice Strike Continues

Mobilization for Justice (MFJ) members continue to strike in an effort to bolster free legal services for New Yorkers and combat high staff turnover rates. The strike, now in its seventh week, is the longest legal services walk-out in New York City's history since 2003.

Seeking a fair contract to maintain the quality of free legal services, the Union is addressing the MFJ’s high attrition rate. The strike has received support from U.S. Congressman Jamaal Bowman, who joined the picket line, and labor leaders demanding a fair contract from MFJ. UAW International President Shawn Fain criticized MFJ Management’s union busting tactics at a rally last week.

The 2003 MFJ strike, lasting nine weeks, saw staff members protest against a contract that would eliminate health coverage for spouses/partners. Chaumtoli Huq, a former MFJ staff attorney and current Associate Professor at CUNY School of Law, voiced her support for the ongoing strike and stressed the importance of equitable healthcare benefits for frontline workers.

The strike comes amid New York City's worst homelessness crisis, rising evictions, and an unprecedented need for legal services for immigrants. Striking MFJ staff, including attorneys, paralegals, and social workers, represent these individuals in courts and governmental agencies. Social worker Craig Hughes criticized the MFJ Management for their indifference towards the caseloads and the organization's sustainability.

The Union accuses the MFJ Management of delaying contract negotiations, engaging in unfair labor practices, and aggressive union busting. They allege that MFJ Management terminated staff healthcare abruptly after the Union declared a strike and did not return to the bargaining table until the fourth week. The Union also claims that MFJ Management's prolonged refusal to bargain in good faith is negatively impacting their clients.
