Houston Teachers' Unions Demand Probe into Lorenzo Salgado's Killing
Houston, Texas – Call for Investigation into the Death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo
In the wake of the tragic death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston resident and father, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Texas AFT, and the Houston Federation of Teachers (HFT) have expressed strong condemnation. They are urging for an independent investigation into the incident and demand an end to the Houston Police Department's collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
AFT President Randi Weingarten emphasized the importance of viewing immigrants as individuals, not just statistics. She stated, “Every day, immigrants across the United States wake up and head to work to provide for their loved ones. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who lived in this country for 35 years, should be remembered as more than headline—his random killing at the hands of ICE is yet another reminder that the agency has no interest in treating people with the dignity, humanity, and respect they deserve.” Weingarten called for accountability and a full independent investigation to honor Lorenzo's memory.
Texas AFT President Zeph Capo expressed his emotional response to the incident, stating, “Shock and outrage can’t possibly sum up how I’m feeling right now.” Capo criticized the federal government's actions, highlighting a need for transparency and accountability, and joined the call for a comprehensive investigation.
HFT President Jackie Anderson added, “All Houstonians deserve the right to peacefully exist.” Anderson urged local leadership to prioritize the safety of city residents.
The reduction in violent crime in Houston is a testament to the efforts of city officials and safety officers. However, the presence of ICE is perceived as a threat to these achievements. Both the city of Houston and Harris County are urged to conduct a thorough and independent investigation to assess whether the use of deadly force was justified and to take appropriate legal action if necessary.
The American Federation of Teachers represents 1.8 million members, including pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals, higher education faculty, government employees, healthcare workers, and early childhood educators.
