Golden Gate Bridge Painters Honored with AFSCME Never Quit Award
Golden Gate Bridge Painters Honored for Exceptional Service
Suspended high above the waters of San Francisco Bay, painting the Golden Gate Bridge is not for the faint-hearted. The job demands unwavering concentration amid the fog, rain, and gusty winds, not to mention the bridge's sway under the weight of passing trucks, which can feel like a tremor.
For Joe De Gier, an experienced bridge painter, and Javier Chavez, an apprentice, these challenges are all part of their daily work environment. Despite these obstacles, they are dedicated to their roles, viewing them as more than just jobs, but as a calling.
“It’s something that I take pride in,” De Gier expresses, highlighting the satisfaction he derives from his work.
As members of AFSCME Council 57, De Gier and Chavez have been recognized for their dedication and service to the community with the Never Quit Service Award. This award is given to those who excel in public service and positively impact their communities.
Chavez, who admits to a "reasonable fear of heights," shares, “I don’t like heights. But if I’m with people that know what they’re doing, and I’m wearing my equipment, then I have no problem.”
Their inspiring story is shared in a video, where De Gier and Chavez recount their experiences working on one of the world's most iconic bridges.
If you know a colleague who goes above and beyond in their community, consider nominating them for the AFSCME’s Never Quit Service Award.
