Historic Unionization for Southern ReadyMix Drivers in Georgia
In a landmark decision, 70 concrete truck drivers from Southern ReadyMix have successfully unionized, marking the first time in 25 years that a ready-mix unit in Georgia has done so. These drivers, serving the greater Metro Atlanta region and beyond, have joined the ranks of Teamsters Local 528 to enhance their working conditions.
Tom Gesualdi, leading the Teamsters Building Material and Construction Trade Division, expressed immense pride in the drivers' decision to unite with Teamsters. He commented, “They have proven once again that if construction industry workers want the best chance at building a livelihood, the only way to go is with the Teamsters.”
Despite facing strong opposition from their employer, the drivers showed resilience. Chuck Stiles, a representative of Teamsters Local 528, noted, “Southern ReadyMix Teamsters overcame an intense anti-union campaign from the company and have shown that solidarity will always beat lies and misinformation.”
The drivers joined the union with the intention of negotiating for better pay, improved work regulations, and enhanced health care benefits for themselves and their families. New union member and driver Tony Johnson stated, “I voted to become a Teamster because one person can be ignored, but united workers can’t be denied.”
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, established in 1903, currently represents over 1.3 million members across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
