AFT President Criticizes Supreme Court's Final Opinions of the Year
Supreme Court's Recent Decisions Draw Criticism from AFT President
WASHINGTON—In response to the Supreme Court's latest set of rulings, AFT President Randi Weingarten expressed significant concern over the direction of the Court's decisions.
“This court is on a mission to shamelessly shift the balance of power in the country toward big money and corporate interests and away from the American people,” Weingarten stated.
This term, the conservative majority of justices has been accused of favoring affluent interests in key decisions regarding campaign finance, LGBTQIA+ rights, refugee rights, and the authority of independent agencies to act in the public's interest. Weingarten criticized the justices for allegedly crafting legal justifications based on preconceived ideological beliefs.
Despite some relief regarding birthright citizenship, Weingarten noted the concerning dissent from three justices who seemingly contest a constitutional right she believes is unambiguously outlined.
Weingarten further commented on the political nature of the Court's actions, suggesting that the real threat to democracy comes from those on the Supreme Court bench. She highlighted a declining public confidence in the Court, suggesting that fundamental reforms are necessary to restore trust.
