Teamsters Celebrate New Unionization at Major Agribusiness in California
The drivers at J.R. Simplot's Central Valley operations have taken a significant step toward unionization, marking a crucial victory for workers seeking fair representation. Their efforts culminated in a successful vote to join Teamsters Local 431 after a concerted organizing campaign.
"When workers in the unit first approached Local 431 about organizing, we knew that they were ready to put in the work to get this done," said Justin Scott, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 431. "They were eager to finally have their voices heard by the company, and we are excited they will be joining the long Teamsters history of delivering strong contracts for the improvement of working people’s lives."
The team of 16 drivers at Helm is responsible for the distribution of hazardous agricultural materials, including herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides, to farms and retail customers throughout the region. These drivers are not only highly skilled but also hold Class A Commercial Driver's Licenses with endorsements for hazardous materials hauling.
Manuel Martinez, a driver involved in the organizing efforts, remarked, “For years, management made empty promises about wages and benefits, but now we have the strength to hold them accountable. As Teamsters, we will finally get the respect we deserve from this company.”
Echoing this sentiment, Jose “Pepe” Servin, another driver and member of Local 431, shared his enthusiasm: “I’m so happy we organized at this company. I was a Teamster before, and I know they deliver strong wages, health care and retirement benefits. Once we had an election, my dream of being a Teamster again became a reality. Now we’re fighting for a fair first contract.”
J.R. Simplot, known as one of the largest agribusinesses worldwide, is now the focus of this significant labor development.
