AFT President Criticizes DOJ Indictments Post Operation Metro Surge

Justice Department Indicts 15 Following ICE Operation in Minneapolis

WASHINGTON—The Department of Justice has indicted 15 individuals, including an educator and union member, after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. The operation, which led to fatalities, has sparked significant controversy.

Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), responded to the indictments with a statement emphasizing the importance of civil liberties. “Freedom of speech and the right to peacefully protest are cornerstones of American society. These rights are not privileges bestowed by those in power—they are fundamental freedoms etched into our Constitution that allow people to challenge injustice, hold their leaders accountable and make their voices heard,” Weingarten stated.

The statement criticized the Trump administration for targeting protesters while failing to address allegations against ICE agents implicated in the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti. Weingarten accused the administration of attempting to suppress dissent and neglecting transparency and accountability.

Weingarten praised Minnesotans for their resilience and community spirit, highlighting their commitment to mutual aid and advocacy in the face of challenges. “Minnesotans have proven that they are resilient in the face of adversity. They stand in solidarity and provide mutual aid and compassion because they cherish an America where people can organize and advocate for change without fear of retribution,” she said.

Concluding her statement, Weingarten affirmed the AFT’s support for free expression across all sectors. “We stand with them in this tumultuous moment and will continue to remain vigilant in defending our 250-year-old freedoms—not just for one group or one cause, but for all.”
