Las Vegas Casino Workers Reach Agreement, Avoid Strike
Negotiations between Rio Hotel and Casino workers and management concluded successfully as workers ratified a new four-year contract. This pivotal moment came after a looming strike threat that highlighted the power of collective bargaining.
Represented by Teamsters Local 986, a group of 62 employees, including front desk staff, laborers, and valet attendants, voted in favor of this agreement, which promises to bring significant improvements to their working conditions.
The newly ratified contract ensures a 15 percent wage increase, enhancements to vacation policies, and the continuation of benefits under the Teamsters Health and Welfare plan. Additionally, it offers protections against the impacts of technology on job security and the option for employees to join the Teamsters 401(k) plan.
"Our members stood strong, and management had no other choice but to deliver," said Tim Vera, President of Local 986. He emphasized that the success was a result of the workers' unity and refusal to be overlooked.
Malinda Zarcone, a front desk worker and steward, noted, "All we asked for was a fair contract that allows us to do our job without worrying. We didn’t want to strike, but we were ready if it came to that."
The agreement emerged after an intense period of negotiations, which had been stalled for nearly two years. The workers' decision to authorize a strike on November 10 over unfair labor practices was a pivotal move that expedited the process.
"Management dragged out negotiations and our members held them accountable," commented Tommy Blitsch, Director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, highlighting the union's readiness to act decisively.
Across the country, the Teamsters represent around 6,000 casino and casino hotel workers. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, established in 1903, represents 1.3 million workers in North America. More details can be found at Teamster.org.
