Proposed 391-Acre Data Center Campus Near Indianapolis Gains Traction
The Facts -
- A 391-acre data center is proposed near Indianapolis, boosting Indiana's tech growth.
- Morgan County filed rezoning for the project, which includes five initial buildings.
- Tech giants plan over $25B in Indiana data centers due to market expansion.
The tech industry's rapid expansion continues as a major developer sets its sights on a new 391-acre data center campus near Indianapolis. This proposal is the latest in a series of large-scale projects in Indiana, which has recently emerged as a top destination for major technology firms.

Indianapolis is rapidly becoming a vital hub for data center activities.
In collaboration with local economic development officials, Morgan County has initiated rezoning applications for the project, which lies strategically between Indianapolis and Bloomington in Morgan Township. This was initially covered by Inside Indiana Business. The site plans reveal five preliminary structures, but they also allow for "the development of a large industrial campus with a variety of uses with flexibility to grow as the market may dictate."
A significant feature of the proposed site is a transmission line running through the property from AES Indiana, encompassing 18 parcels owned by 10 different entities. The developer has reportedly secured purchase options on these parcels pending project approval.
Rezoning applications are set to be reviewed by the Morgan County Plan Commission next week. Over the last two years, Indiana's data center sector has expanded, particularly in the northwest, primarily due to constraints in Chicago. However, central Indiana, near Indianapolis, is also attracting hyperscalers, given its strategic location between Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, a growing digital infrastructure hub.
Since early 2024, tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta have unveiled plans for extensive data center projects in Indiana, with investments potentially surpassing $25 billion.
In November, Meta announced a new 1,500-acre data center to be constructed northwest of Indianapolis in Lebanon, Indiana. Earlier, the company revealed plans for a separate 619-acre facility in Jeffersonville. Meanwhile, Google purchased 900 acres in Fort Wayne for a $2 billion data center, and Amazon Web Services has committed to an $11 billion campus located between South Bend and Chicago in New Carlisle.
Projects by Microsoft include two new data centers in the region, with plans for a billion-dollar campus on 489 acres in La Porte and an additional 939-acre site acquisition in Mishawaka in June.
Investors in digital infrastructure are also banking on Indiana's growth. In January, KKR and Canada's Public Sector Pension Investment Board took a nearly 20% stake in a power transmission subsidiary of AEP in Indiana, driven by the increasing power demands from burgeoning data centers.
