Alcan Port Entry Revamp Clears Environmental Review
The Facts -
- The project will improve the port's efficiency with modern facilities.
- Alternative 1 includes inspection lanes and updated technology for security.
- A 14,400 sq ft area in Tetlin Refuge will serve as a helicopter landing zone.
Enhancing Port Efficiency with Modern Facilities
The project aims to boost the port's operational efficiency and capabilities by introducing new, modern, and energy-efficient facilities. Once completed, the upgraded port will be equipped to handle peak seasonal traffic volumes more effectively.
Preferred Alternative for Port Expansion and Modernization
In the Final Environmental Impact Statement, the GSA selected Alternative 1, focusing on Expansion and Modernization in Place. This alternative will introduce dual-purpose inspection lanes and enclosed spaces for secondary inspections. A new main operations building will incorporate modern technology that aligns with US Customs and Border Protection's security standards. Additionally, an updated residential area will be separated from port operations to ensure the safety of personnel and their families.
Northway Village's Role in the Project
Situated about 40 miles up the Alaska Highway from the port of entry, Northway Village serves as a cooperating agency in this substantial upgrade.
Infrastructure Developments in Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge
Under the chosen alternative, approximately 14,400 square feet of previously cleared land on Airs Hill in the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge will be designated as a helicopter landing zone. Additionally, improvements to an existing hillside access road will include safety features like new guardrails for its steep sections.
