National Nurses United Condemns ICE, Calls for Abolition After RN's Murder
National Nurses United Responds to the Killing of RN Alex Pretti
National Nurses United, representing over 225,000 registered nurses across the nation, has issued a response to the tragic death of Alex Pretti, RN.
The organization expressed deep concern and anger over what they describe as the "cold-blooded murder" by immigration agents of Alex Pretti, a nurse with the Veterans Health Administration. Pretti was committed to saving lives, both in his role as an ICU nurse and as a community advocate with the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).
In a statement, National Nurses United emphasized, “The nation’s nurses, who make it their mission to care for and save human lives, are horrified and outraged that immigration agents have once again committed cold-blooded murder of a public observer who posed no threat to them.” The union called for justice and accountability for Pretti’s death.
The statement further criticized ICE and related immigration enforcement agencies, citing a pattern of violence and lawlessness. According to the union, these agencies have become a significant public health threat, accusing them of kidnapping families and now, the murder of a registered nurse.
National Nurses United is advocating for the abolition of ICE, urging immediate actions to halt the violence attributed to such agencies. They are calling for a rejection of the upcoming Homeland Security Appropriations bill in the Senate, and they intend to oppose any elected officials who support funding for ICE.
The organization stated, “We will be doing everything in our power to vote out any elected official who supports funding for this all-out assault on the health, safety, and civil rights of our people.”
The call to action concludes with a firm demand: “Abolish ICE now.”
National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States, with more than 225,000 members nationwide. Affiliates include California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association.
