California Nurses Celebrate Prop 50 Passage to Protect Democracy
Nurses Applaud Proposition 50 as a Step Toward Democratic Protection
In California, unionized nurses are celebrating the recent approval of Proposition 50, which they believe will enhance democratic protections and create a more equitable political landscape. The California Nurses Association (CNA) announced that this measure is a response to President Trump's efforts to consolidate congressional power.
To support the initiative, nurses and volunteers from the union were actively involved in outreach efforts, knocking on over 17,000 doors and making upwards of 394,500 phone calls to encourage a "Yes" vote on Prop 50.
Sandy Reding, RN, a president of the CNA, expressed gratitude towards California voters, stating, “We are grateful that California voters have unequivocally approved Prop. 50 to stand up to Texas and other states stealing the voting power of Black, Brown, and working-class people to maintain control in Congress.” She emphasized that Proposition 50 addresses issues like discriminatory redistricting in Texas and other areas. According to Reding, "Elections matter," referencing the July decision by Republicans to pass H.R. 1, which she claims undermines Medicaid and removes health insurance from millions to benefit wealthy individuals and corporations.
Reding further highlighted the stakes for patients, asserting, “Nurses know that our vulnerable patients’ lives are on the line.” She called for a national effort to restore health care funding and collective bargaining rights for federal workers, including VA nurses. “And nurses know, when we fight, we win,” she added.
