Genesis Logistics Drivers Authorize Strike Amidst Labor Disputes

In Richmond, Virginia, tensions escalate as over 200 Genesis Logistics drivers, employed by a subsidiary of DHL Supply Chain servicing 7-Eleven stores in the Mid-Atlantic region, have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike. The decision arises from grievances over the company's refusal to engage in sincere contract negotiations, alongside alleged illegal alterations to working conditions and the dismissal of union advocates.
According to Dwayne Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 322, "This strike vote is the result of the illegal, immoral, and outrageous behavior by management at this greedy company." He further criticized the company's retaliatory measures against workers exercising their unionization rights.
In a significant move back in April, Genesis drivers chose to unite with the Teamsters with a striking 90 percent approval. However, since this decision, management's commitment to bargaining has been questioned, with reports of intensified anti-union strategies. The workforce's demands include a just contract, enhanced wages, affordable health benefits, and improved safety at work. The possibility of a strike looms if these conditions are not met.
Echoing the sentiments of the workforce, Matthew Relford, a Genesis driver affiliated with Local 322, commented, “Our decision to authorize a strike reflects the unjust and illegal treatment we’ve endured from day one. We don’t want to strike, but we will not be silenced or bullied for standing up for our rights.”
This strike approval grants Local 322 the authority to initiate a strike at any given moment. The Teamsters insist on a return to credible negotiations and demand an end to purported unfair labor practices.
Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, emphasized, “The members of Local 322 are fighting for what every worker in this country deserves: fair pay, quality benefits, and basic respect on the job.” He warned that the company would be held accountable for any violations against its workers.
