The U.S. Must Innovate to Meet Rising Electric Grid Demands

As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries globally, the United States stands ready to lead this new era. However, a critical lag in developing the country's electric power infrastructure could impede progress, posing a significant concern for the nation.

The U.S. faces substantial challenges in building new electric infrastructure to meet the increasing demand driven by data centers, electrification policies, demographic growth, and industrial expansion. This demand shines a spotlight on an already critical situation involving insufficient infrastructure investment and a disorderly shift in the electric grid.

Siting and Permitting for Efficient Development

Historically, the U.S. has managed power demand through energy efficiency initiatives and the natural evolution of more energy-efficient appliances. This has led to the construction of few large-scale infrastructure projects and the establishment of detailed approval procedures to ensure only the best projects proceed.

Now, with unprecedented electricity demand impacting national security and global leadership, societal perspectives must adapt to integrate more energy responsibly and swiftly into the grid. We should aim not to let the ideal become the adversary of the achievable.

Proactive Role of Load in the Electric System

Traditionally, demand in the electric sector has been considered an external factor, aside from selective demand response initiatives. The burgeoning of massive data centers, each with energy requirements similar to large cities, necessitates an evolution in our electric reliability framework to address their operational behaviors.

The North American Electric Reliability Corp. is racing to establish criteria for identifying significant computational loads and set performance standards to maintain grid reliability. Similarly, the Electric Power Research Institute is crafting the Flex MOSAIC framework to standardize load flexibility, which helps curtail energy use for grid reliability.

Diverse Technologies for a Reliable Grid

While policymakers often favor developing the least costly energy resources, such as solar and batteries, the reliability of integrating these technologies involves additional considerations beyond just cost.

Each power generation resource comes with its advantages and drawbacks. Solar energy, despite its affordability, depends on consistent sunlight, and storage technologies require energy surplus periods for charging. Meanwhile, natural gas offers flexibility but might face delivery limitations; hydroelectricity relies on rainfall; nuclear plants need refueling; coal can freeze; and wind is intermittent.

A dependable and efficient grid must utilize a variety of technologies, balancing cost-effectiveness with reliability to meet societal expectations. This approach not only ensures consistent electricity supply but also maintains voltage and frequency for a stable high-voltage transmission system.

Balancing Grid Investment with Societal Benefits

While affordability concerns are valid for many, the imperative to invest in electric infrastructure is equally pressing, given the anticipated demand growth and the necessity to sustain current living standards. Industry forecasts suggest that over $1 trillion is needed to modernize the grid within the next four to five years.

Much of our existing electric infrastructure was built during and after the World War II industrial boom. Thus, investing in the electric grid should be seen as a long-term investment for society, supporting AI, data centers, and future needs.

Despite future challenges, recognizing and seizing this generational opportunity by evolving our perspectives is crucial. This shift will help build a future where our children and grandchildren can thrive.
