Strong Solidarity Leads to New Contract for Over 200 Bimbo Bakeries Workers in New England
(WASHINGTON) – A significant labor agreement has been ratified by members of Teamsters Local 170 and Local 633 at Bimbo Bakeries, following a decisive 90 percent approval from the workers. This development comes after the workers authorized a strike due to the company's initial refusal to meet local standards and offer substantial wage increases.
Jeff Padellaro, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 633 and Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference, acknowledged the unity among workers by stating, “Nothing is stronger than Teamsters solidarity, and our members proved it throughout negotiations with Bimbo.” He further emphasized that the workforce's perseverance was crucial in pushing the company to acknowledge their valuable contributions.
Shannon R. George, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 170, highlighted the determination of the members, saying, “Rank-and-file Teamsters never gave up the idea that they deserved better than what they were being offered. Our members were prepared to strike to win what they’re worth.”
Key elements of the newly secured six-year contract include enhancements in pension plans, wage hikes, and a decrease in health care costs, alongside robust job security measures.
According to Jason Morin, a shop steward at Bimbo Bakeries and a member of Local 633, the readiness of the workers to strike was pivotal in achieving this deal. “We were tired of management taking for granted the work we do that makes Bimbo so successful,” Morin asserted, underscoring the pride in the newly secured agreement.
